Source-modeling, detection and science of gravitational waves from compact binaries

Abstract

Compact binaries made of black holes and/or neutron stars are the most promising sources for laser-interferometer gravitational-wave detectors on the earth. In this talk I will review the analytical approximation schemes and the template families developed to catch the tiny waves buried in the detector noise and extract astrophysical information from them.
