Searching the LIGO data for coincidences with Gamma Ray Bursts

ORAL

Abstract

The discovery that short Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB) also occur in old elliptical galaxies supports the idea that they are generated by the merger of two neutron stars or a neutron star with a black hole, after they spiral together due to emission of gravitational waves. Because the exact position of those GRB is known in most cases, we are searching the LIGO data at those times with an analysis pipeline, which also runs online. Injections have been performed to test this analysis pipeline and to test the detection statistics. The status of this search is presented in this talk.
