Abstract
The first part of the lecture covers Fermi's arrival and research at Columbia University in 1939, including his concerns for colleagues who remained in Italy at that time. The second part discusses the period from 1946 to 1950, the most exciting time of my life as Fermi's student in the physics department at the University of Chicago.
