Responsible, Renewable, Recyclable: An Energy Management Strategy for Modern Accelerators

COFFEE_KLATCH · Invited

Abstract

The European Spallation Source (ESS), which will be built in the south of Sweden, uses a 5MW proton beam from a 2.5GeV superconducting linac. When completed, it will be the world's most powerful cold neutron source. The ESS has set the objective to be carbon neutral and as energy efficient as possible. This will be achieved in part by energy saving measures, but also by investing in renewable energy sources and re- using the excess heat through the local district heating system. This talk will give an overview of the ESS project and its energy management strategy.
