Marshak Lectureship: Women in Physics in Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African countries: Progress and Challenges

Abstract

The paper gives the status of some African women in Physics. African Women are still underrepresented in Physics. Many African governments have realized the need to harness the contribution of their women population in scientific fields and therefore are putting in place mechanisms to encourage and retain more women in Science. The difficulties encountered by some of the women are enumerated. The progress made by the activities of the Working group of women in physics in some of the African countries and some success stories are highlighted.
