Theoretical motivation for the WIMP dark mattermodel and probable parameter space

In this talk, I will review the theory of the weakly-interacting massive particle (WIMP) as a cold dark matter candidate and its status in light of the current experimental data. I will then discuss the theoretical motivation for the near-future direct detection experiments in the WIMP framework.
