Effective Neutron Polarization in Helium-3

COFFEE_KLATCH · Invited

Abstract

Polarized helium-3 continues to be a popular and effective polarized neutron target since the neutron carries almost all of the polarization of the system. However, as experiments become more precise, the effects of the polarization carried by the protons in polarized helium-3 become increasingly important. Quasi-elastic scattering experiments are being conducted to better understand the initial-state polarization of the three-body system within the helium-3 nucleus and gain insight into the initial-state polarization of helium-3. I will review some of these recent experimental results and discuss their implications for future experiments.
