Panel: Advising Students About Non-academic Career Paths

Only about 5\% of all physics BS recipients - and only 20\% of physics PhD recipients - find permanent employment in what is considered “traditional” academic faculty jobs. Yet the vast majority of mentors and role models encountered by students while earning their degrees are in those roles. Therefore, responsible career mentorship means being intentional about exposing students to non-academic careers, and providing them with the skills, knowledge, and mindset to be successful in those roles. \\ \\ In this panel discussion, we will explore advising strategies to support effective career mentorship of students for careers outside of academia, and share resources that can help faculty integrate workplace-relevant skills into their students’ experience.
