Build your Science Trust Toolkit: Moving from Correction to Connection
ORAL
Abstract
When we hear non-scientists share information that is contrary to the current scientific consensus, our first inclination is often to offer a correction or to educate. However, the fraught interactions that can result highlight that success cannot be reached only by filling perceived knowledge deficits in non-scientists. In this interactive workshop, we will work on shifting our mindsets from the limiting, "I need to correct, educate, and win" to the more useful and civically minded, "I need to connect with people with honesty, empathy, and humility." Participants will practice reflective listening, one useful skill for building trusting relationships. Participants will leave the workshop having added a new tool to their "science trust toolkit." This workshop is student-friendly! Skills discussed can be built upon and transferred to broader settings.
