Chirped magneto-optical trap of molybdenum
ORAL
Abstract
We directly load a magneto-optical trap of molybdenum from a cryogenic beam by chirping the trapping laser detuning. Trapped samples are optimized for atom number, temperature, and lifetime. We subsequently load into a magnetic trap and determine the vacuum-limited lifetime. The lifetimes of the magneto-optically trapped sample and the magnetically trapped sample allows us to determine the two leading partial decay rates out of the laser cooling transition. We are also able to determine the isotope shift for the cycling transition for all stable bosonic isotopes of molybdenum, with up to four times improved precision over previous measurements. Finally, we discuss prospects for trapping magnesium monofluoride using the chirped magneto-optical trap.
