Second Chance AI driven Activity in a Blending Learning First-year Physics Class at MIT
ORAL · Invited
Abstract
The first-year 8.01 Mechanics and 8.02 E&M courses at MIT are taught using a blending learning model. In the pre-class learning sequences students work through videos, text and graded problems which have a limited number of attempts. If a student does not correctly answer a graded problem they may choose to go to the second chance webpage. In order to get credit for their problem, they first see the answer, then in a text box explain their misconception(s), and in a separate text box describe the correct answer. An AI based program analyzes their misconceptions and prepares powerpoint slides for the teaching faculty to review before the follow-up class which is designed to be an active learning class. Based on the analysis of the misconceptions, faculty may adjust their presentation and choices of active learning activities for that class.
