The tamed chaos of long flexible fibers in wall turbulence

ORAL

Abstract

We investigate the chaotic regime of flexible fibers of varying lengths and rigidity, suspended in a turbulent channel flow at a shear Reynolds number of 1200. Through direct numerical simulations, we showcase the progressively constrained trajectories undertaken by fibers of increasing lengths. We also find that longer fibers show an increased tendency to form clusters, as evidenced by the reduction in their correlation dimensions. Furthermore, recurrence quantification analysis of the fibers' deformation over time reveals an apparent suppression in their chaotic behaviors with increasing fiber lengths.
