Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in Plasmas Relevant to Direct-Drive Laser Fusion

Abstract

Recent experimental and theoretical work on stimulated Brillouin scattering in plasmas of interest to direct-drive ICF has resulted in improved understanding of previous experimental data. Extrapolations to NIF-scale direct-drive plasmas can now be made with greater confidence. The region close to critical density has been identified as the region where the interplay of hydrodynamic evolution, SBS gain, and electromagnetic seeding is particularly complex and important.
