The next-generation Magnetic Recoil Spectrometer on OMEGA and NIF for diagnosing yield, areal density, and ion temperature with unprecedented accuracy and data turnaround
POSTER
Abstract
The MRS-upgrade (MRSu) is being designed to replace the current MRS on OMEGA and the NIF. The MRSu will provide far-superior performance and faster data turnaround than the MRS, i.e., a 5× improvement in energy resolution and 20× improvement in data turnaround time and thus have an immediate impact on the mainline ICF program at both facilities. The substantially improved performance of the MRSu is enabled by using electromagnets that provide a short focal plane (~10 cm) and unprecedented flexibility for a wide range of applications. The goal is to implement a radiation-hard electronic detection system capable of providing rapid data acquisition and analysis. The development of the MRSu will also set the foundation for the more advanced MRSt and serve as a testbed for its implementation at the NIF. This work was supported in part by the U.S. DOE, LLE, and LLNL.
