Hyperion: A high-fidelity simulation capability for ICF hohlraum environments

POSTER

Abstract

Hohlraum environments in laser-indirect-drive ICF experiments are remarkably difficult to simulate faithfully. Despite much progress with reduced models (such as rad-hydro), important modeling limitations exist. Vexing examples include the inability to model plasma interpenetration and mix and nonlinear laser-plasma interactions (LPI). As a result, significant modeling uncertainties remain in hohlraum simulations. Hyperion is a LANL-developed, GPU-ready particle-based hybrid fluid-kinetic simulation code featuring kinetic ions, fluid electrons, and energetic hot-electron component, radiation transport, and novel nonlinear LPI reduced models [1,2]. Multiscale Monte Carlo collisional modules have been developed [3] that are able to cope with realistic hohlraum densities and temperatures. Laser energy delivery is modeled with the LLE-developed Mazinisin code [4]. Hyperion employs a modern multiphysics coupling framework, AMP [5], which supports adaptive mesh refinement, modern scalable solvers, flexible physics coupling and timestepping strategies, and native GPU support. In this presentation, we will introduce Hyperion’s current capabilities and future development plans, along with examples of hohlraum-relevant simulations currently being performed.
