GENRAY/CQL3D modeling for NSTX-U with combined HHFW and NBI
POSTER
Abstract
The results presented here are part of a collaborative research project between GA and PPPL with the goal of predict-first modeling and experimental demonstration of fully noninductive scenarios in NSTX-U. One of the tasks is aiming to make predictions and to find optimal parameters for use of the high-harmonic fast wave (HHFW) system, which is the topic of this abstract. Parameter scans of launched wavenumber, effective charge, plasma density and temperature are being performed on reference NSTX-U shots. For speed of calculation, the ray-tracing code GENRAY was used for the parameter scans. In many cases there is a non-negligible power fraction predicted to be damped on the fast ions. Given that the fast-ion description in GENRAY relies on the simplification of an equivalent Maxwellian distribution function, an effort was made to include the quasilinear Fokker-Planck solver CQL3D in the workflow to allow the fast ions to be described by a 2D slowing down distribution, and to allow evolution of the distribution functions as HHFW is applied. Results of parameter scans with GENRAY/CQL3D will be compared to the earlier results with standalone GENRAY.
