Advances in the characterization of trapped ion crystals
ORAL
Abstract
Well controlled trapped ion crystals, prepared through laser cooling, provide a platform for quantum sensing and simulation in atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics. I will discuss how AMO techniques developed for implementing quantum information processing with trapped ion crystals have improved our ability to characterize thermal and non-thermal motional excitations of the crystal. Examples from work characterizing single-plane crystals of several hundred 9Be+ ions in the NIST Penning trap will be presented.
