Recent Progress on Coupled Core-Edge Pedestal-SOL Integrated Modeling
ORAL
Abstract
The coupled Core-Edge Pedestal-Scrape-Off-Layer (CESOL) integrated modeling is a mission-critical tool for design of Fusion Pilot Plant (FPP), enabling self-consistent whole plasma modeling (WPM) from core to wall and whole facility modeling (WFM) for coupled plasma-engineering assessment and optimization. CESOL is built on the High Performance Computing (HPC)-based Integrated Plasma Simulator (IPS) framework, which supports modular coupling, massive ensemble simulations, and uncertainty quantification (UQ) through tools like DAKOTA. CESOL is an extension of the backbone integrated modeling framework, IPS-FASTRAN, combining pedestal (EPED) calculations with core transport (TGLF) and boundary physics (SOLPS-ITER) models, self-consistent with MHD equilibrium, heating and current drives, and ideal/resistive MHD instabilities. Recent progress on the CESOL integrated modeling will be presented including extension of computational domain to far-SOL region, impurities transport from wall to core in metal wall environment, validation against DIII-D and KSTAR experiments, pulse simulation from plasma current ramp-up to termination, and physics-based design of FPP.
