New SubmissionFrustraum 1050 campaign on the National Ignition Facility

Abstract

The Frustraum 1050 campaign aims to reduce hohlraum energy losses by about 10% compared to current cylindrical implosions, using a curved frustrum. The curved frustraum geometry has been modified from earlier designs: its overall length and width near the LEH planes have each been increased by 5% for better P2 control and features a central circular arc spanning –3.2 mm < z < 3.2 mm. The central part is similar to previous rugby designs but the SBS is very low in the frustraum design with endcaps. The HDC capsule’s inner radius has been reduced from 1.1 mm to 1.05 mm and its thickness to 86 um, improving low-mode control and reducing areal density asymmetry. These changes enhance hohlraum efficiency, effectively increasing available laser energy and power, enabling exploration of a parameter space that is currently inaccessible with the existing National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser, i.e. > 440TW and >1.9 MJ. The campaign uses a HyE-like pulse shape.

We present results from the tuning campaign, culminating in a Tritium-Hydrogen-Deuterium (THD) layered implosion, demonstrating improved efficiency. Methods for reducing P4 asymmetries(beam staggering) and backscatter(quad splitting outers and 30-degree cones) are described. Results are compared to previous HyE experiments conducted at higher energies and powers.
