Scaling studies of RMFo-heated FRCs using the TriForce code
POSTER
Abstract
Understanding the response of plasma in a field-reversed configuration (FRC) to heating by odd-parity rotating magnetic fields (RMFo) is critical for designing and operating future RMF-FRC fusion experiments. In this work, we use the TriForce code to examine the heating/sustainment of an FRC plasma as the device size is scaled up toward a breakeven reactor concept. These 3D3V simulations are run both with and without current deposition; as the latter is effectively running TriForce in single-particle mode, we present a code-to-code comparison with the output of the single-particle Hamiltonian code RMF in order to highlight the impact of collective effects. Cell-level calculations of radiation losses and fusion power production are also shown for each of the device configurations studied, along with preliminary comparisons to an updated binary collision model.
