Whither the Undergraduate Physics Curriculum?

ORAL · Invited

Abstract

Is the physics curriculum ripe for change, or is it withering on the vine? Whether you see dark clouds ahead or not, this talk will whet your appetite for discussion. Recent years have seen growing interest in discussions of revising, reforming, or revolutionizing the undergraduate physics curriculum. However, these discussions have occurred within relatively narrow circles, and there is no consensus on what problems exist with the curriculum or proposed changes. This talk will present a bit of the history of this question, as well as a view of what is already changing and the forces driving those changes. Some examples of change will be drawn from the speaker's institution, but the focus of the talk will be the questions, not the answers. There will be audience participation, so come prepared.
