Welcoming diverse physics student: awareness of transfer students of color needs and the institutional demands
ORAL
Abstract
In this presentation I will share a description about how institutional advocates (faculty or staff) are aware of the systemic discrimination, experienced by transfer students of color within STEM, which manifests both in the structural and interpersonal domains. In this extended case study, we use Acevedo's (2020) work about high school teachers as Nepantleras to describe how institutional advocates are also Nepantleras at a bachelor-degree granting institution. The importance of the work is supporting transfer students of color in their physics' paths to contribute their rich ideas to our physics community. We focus on three case studies of institutional advocates, Dream-ward, Reese and Mike. In this presentation, we narrate on the journey the Napantlera/o/x are becoming aware of the interpersonal and structural domains of institutionalized discrimination of transfer students of color at a bachelor-degree granting institution.
