Abstract

The American Physical Society (APS) has many fora which are organized groups that focus on non-technical topics such as Education, or International Physics or Diversity and Inclusion. APS members can join as many fora as they would like at no cost. This talk, by the current Secretary/Treasurer of the Forum on Physics and Society (FPS), will describe the history of the FPS (the oldest forum of the APS) and its various activities which focus on physicists' influence on the world and which address issues at the interface of physics and society as a whole. Physics forms the basis of many inventions and phenomena that affect society. Physicists can help solve complex global challenges via collaborations with policymakers and scientists around the world. The FPS organizes sessions at the March and April APS meetings with invited speakers who describe how they are addressing complex global challenges. This talk will cover some past topics of our invited sessions and seek your input on topics you would like to see in the future.
