Abstract

Abstract:

For decades, the spin of the proton has presented a problem.  This launched studies of sea-quark and gluon contributions. Fermilab E1039 is pursuing the sea-quark contribution. It will focus on Sivers function which represents the correlation of the transverse momentum of an unpolarized proton with the spin of a transversely polarized nucleon. We will use the high luminosity 120 MeV proton beam and polarized ammonia targets, NH3 and ND3, to measure the Sivers function for u bar and d bar sea quarks in the nucleon for Bjorken x in the range 0.1 < x < 0.5, using the Drell-Yan process. This will be the first determination of the Sivers function for sea quarks in this x range. The E1039 spectrometer and planned improvements to do this sensitive measurement will be presented
