Photonic hypercrystals

We introduce a new “universality class” of artificial optical media - the photonic hypercrystals. These hyperbolic metamaterials with a periodic spatial variation of dielectric permittivity on a subwavelength scale, combine the features of optical metamaterials and photonics crystals within the same medium.
