Connecting With the Public

Abstract

Science is no use to society if it occurs in a vacuum. I’ll speak about how scientists can better communicate their work to the public, both through the news media, including Scientific American, and directly. We’ll cover tips for distilling complex topics into digestible information, strategies to use when writing and speaking about physics, common myths about journalism and journalists, and ways to reach the public directly through social media, op-eds and blogs. I’ll also give you a window into our process at Scientific American and what we’re looking for from scientist authors. I hope to include useful info for seasoned communicators as well as scientists new to outreach.
