APS Guide to Effective Practices in Undergraduate Physics Programs: How will this help my Department?
Invited
Abstract
The guide to evidence-based effective practices being developed by the APS is motivated by the challenges faced by undergraduate physics programs. The primary intended audience of the guide is Chairs and Directors of Physics Departments and Programs in the US and its scope encompasses curricula, pedagogy, mentoring, career preparation, undergraduate research and faculty career development. In this talk, concrete examples will be used to illustrate how the guide can be navigated in multiple ways to help programs achieve specific and diverse goals. Using already-completed sections of the guide, we will demonstrate how their broad collection of effective practices provides practical advice and actionable steps for programs at diverse stages -- from launching a new initiative to revitalizing a long-standing program -- while being mindful of the unique variety of local constraints. Along with previewing completed sections of the guide, we will have a preliminary look at sections currently under development.
