Evidence for edge states in trigonal layered PtBi2

ORAL

Abstract

PtBi2 is predicted to be a 3D topological semimetal which possesses triply degenerate point close to Fermi level. Here, we observe that unpredicted edge states exist at the edge of PtBi2 using scanning tunneling microscopy at 4.2K. More importantly, due to the inversion symmetry breaking, PtBi2 features two inequivalent top and bottom surfaces. We detect the edge states at the step edges on both surfaces.
Our experiment results, together with calculations, reveal the interesting physics of monolayer PtBi2.
