Exploring the Role of Quantum Computing in Physical and Chemical Simulations

ORAL · Invited

Abstract

Quantum simulation was one of the earliest suggested use cases for quantum computers and we know that quantum computers are pretty good at it.

First, we briefly look at a few problems from the physical sciences and engineering where quantum algorithms have been developed so far and we will focus on applications from quantum chemistry as one of the most notoriously hard computational problems to date.

We give a review on the evolution of quantum computational chemistry. Challenges in the field are discussed, and we conclude with an outlook of how future efforts regarding chemistry on quantum computers might look like -- in fact, we argue that simulation of dynamics is one of the most promising paths for a long-term perspective.
