Small Budget, Big ImpactDeveloping Successful Science Outreach on a Shoestring

Abstract

Effective and engaging science outreach does not require a large budget. The IBS Center for Quantum Nanoscience in Korea has developed successful outreach programs by focusing on partnerships, earned media, and leveraging existing channels. We initiated a popular art contest by training artists in our quantum research, enabling them to interpret and communicate our science in their own creative voices. Additionally, we integrated a QNS-branded nanoscience curriculum into classrooms nationwide through partnerships with other research centers and middle school teachers, as well as validating the program's effectiveness ourselves.

Through strategic partnerships and utilizing free communication channels, QNS has established high-impact outreach programs that spread the excitement of our science widely and cost-effectively. This presentation will share our techniques and strategies for achieving impactful science outreach with limited resources. Our experience underscores that, with creativity and collaboration, effective outreach is attainable even with limited resources.

* QNS is funded by the Korean Institute for Basic Science and is hosted by Ewha Womans University
