Sharing STEM YouTube Content with China Through the Bilibili Video Platform
ORAL
Abstract
Over the past few years, the importance of good and effective science communication has become more and more evident. However, as the need for science communication has been growing, science communicators can find it hard to reach an audience, and even the most effective and popular communicators can have a hard time reaching a drastically different audience.
For the last few years, I have been helping Veritasium (popular physics educational channel with over 10M subscribers) cross political and cultural barriers to bring the content into China, and in the past year, the Veritasium Chinese translation team has expanded to help the Stand-up Maths (viral math focused channel with over 1M subscribers) and Steve Mould (successful physics/engineering channel with over 2M subscribers) YouTube channels. The rapid growth of both channels on Bilibili, a video sharing platform in China, suggest a strong interest in consuming STEM content from the Chinese audience. In this talk, I want to tell the story of the development for these channels and offer some insight in developing successful science communication content for a Chinese audience.
