Observations and evolution of magnetic massive stars

Magnetic massive stars are different and rarer than their low-mass counterparts. The fields are not contemporaneously generated by a dynamo mechanism, which raises a lot of important questions about their ultimate origin, and indicate that there is still something fundamental we do not understand about star formation. The advent of precise circular polarization instrumentation on large telescopes has enabled a ton of new information about the characteristics of magnetic massive stars. I will present the current status of large spectropolarimetric surveys and the insight gained by detailed studies of remarkable magnetic massive stars.
