Inspecting Selection Techniques of Active Dwarf Galaxies

ORAL

Abstract

We work to compile the most complete census of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in dwarf galaxies from archival data. Our sample is built from previous studies that identify AGN in dwarf galaxies using a variety of multi-wavelength techniques. These methods include optical spectroscopy, infrared colors, photometric variability, and X-ray emission. Different methods identify different populations of AGN due to selection effects that depend on host galaxy properties. The result is a discontinuity between studies as their parent populations and selection methods differ. We perform a uniform selection of all these diagnostic tools using all archival data available for our complete list of galaxies. This will produce the best-yet measurement of the active fraction of dwarf galaxies, which gives a lower bound to the occupation fraction of black holes within dwarf galaxies. Furthermore, we will identify galaxies whose selections overlap across these methods. Future work will search for connections between AGN selection techniques and their host galaxy properties.
