Workshop: State advocacy for HS Physics

ORAL

Abstract

The recent passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) allocates new resources to STEM teacher education, including a provision for state-based STEM Master Corps, differential pay for teachers in high need disciplines including STEM, and greater flexibility in spending Title II funds on teacher preparation. Further, ESSA delegates more authority to states for deciding how to use these funds. This workshop will identify and discuss strategies for advocacy at the state level to improve teacher education policy and support physics teacher preparation programs. It will be led by the APS Washington office, which supports members in advocating for national and state policies regarding physics and physics education. In addition, leaders in physics education will share success stories and strategies in advocating for state-level policy changes.
