Collaborating with K-12 Communities on University Sponsored Programs

ORAL

Abstract

Institutions of higher education often engage in initiatives to support the K-12 community. The national focus on STEM education at the K-12 level has increased opportunities for these initiatives. In this workshop, I will share a few programs resulting from collaborations between the university and the K-12 community. This will include programs that provide prospective and preservice teachers with early teaching experiences, programs that provide professional development to teachers, and programs that offer K-12 students access to resources on the university campus. In this workshop, we will discuss considerations for creating and strengthening collaborations within the K-12 community. In particular, we will focus on setting expectations for personnel, obtaining buy-in at the university and the school district, and finding funding sources. This will be an interactive workshop. Please come with any ideas you have for new programs and details on the programs you have already developed.
