Transforming Secondary Mathematics Teacher Preparation

This presentation will discuss the formation and operation of the Mathematics Teacher Education Partnership (MTE-Partnership), a national consortium of over 90 universities and over 100 school systems, formed to address the undersupply of new secondary mathematics teachers who are well prepared to help their students attain the goals of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The MTE-Partnership has been organized using the Networked Improvement Community (NIC) model developed and used by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching . This approach combines the disciplined inquiry of improvement science with the power of networking to accelerate improvement through broad participant engagement. Although the ‘primary drivers’ and aim of this project pertain to preparing mathematics teachers, the design and lessons of this effort can be applied to physics teacher preparation and a broad range of other education improvement.
