The Production of $\Lambda $ and $\Sigma ^{0}$ Hyperons in Antineutrino--Proton Scattering

Abstract

We obtain total and differential cross sections from near threshold to several GeV for the strangeness changing charged current reactions, $\overline \nu _{L}$+ p $\to \Lambda $+ L$^{+ }$and $\overline \nu _{L}$+ p $\to \Sigma ^{0}$+ L$^{+ }$ , where L stands for an electron , muon or tau lepton. We also obtain the contributions of the various form factors to the total and differential cross sections and gives the estimates for the individual form factors, and discuss the F$_{E}$ and F$_{S}$ form factors for both reactions. This work is in support of possible experiments by the MINER$\nu $ A collaboration. The calculations are phenomenologically based and make use of SU(2) and SU(3) symmetry and related decay processes to obtain those form factors. These reactions may be useful as a test of the SU(3) obtained form factors over a range of q$^{2}$.
