Abstract

Exchange frustration resulting from Kitaev interactions can lead to the emergence of quantum spin liquid states. Experimental realizations of materials with dominant Kitaev interactions, particularly in lattice types beyond honeycomb, remain limited. However, from a materials design perspective, these interactions are expected to emerge in systems that possess: (1) a Jeff = 1/2 ground state, and (2) edge-sharing octahedral geometry. We propose Y-doped calcium iridate, Ca5-xYxIr3O12, as a promising candidate for hosting Kitaev interactions in a quasi-one-dimensional chain-like system. Due to the mixed valence states of these samples, much is still unknown about these materials. In this talk, we report on the synthesis and characterization of Ca5-xYxIr3O12 for x = 0 to x ≈ 1.5. The doping levels of these samples are confirmed through structural analysis using single crystal XRD and electronic characterization via HERFD-XAS. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal a rapid suppression of magnetic order at low doping levels, with the emergence of a new glassy magnetic state at higher doping levels. The evolution of the structural and magnetic properties of this system is investigated using a combination of neutron powder diffraction, μSR, and specific heat.
