Tests of Fundamental Physics with Spin-based Sensors

ORAL  · Invited

Abstract

Novel interactions beyond the four known fundamental forces in nature (electromagnetic, gravitational, strong and weak interactions) may arise due to beyond-the-standard-model physics, manifesting as discrete-symmetry-violating electromagnetic moments correlated with particle spins, exotic spin-dependent forces, and coupling of spins to ultralight bosonic dark-matter fields. Experimental methods and technologies developed for spin-based quantum sensors have rapidly advanced in recent years, and these tools enable increasingly precise control and measurement of spin dynamics. Thus spin-based quantum sensors enable new ways to search for myriad exotic physics phenomena, and offer a methodology to test fundamental physics that is complementary to particle colliders and large-scale particle detectors. In this talk, we highlight several ongoing and proposed experiments searching for beyond-the-standard-model physics using atomic magnetometers and comagnetometers, nuclear magnetic resonance, precision atomic spectroscopy, and levitated ferromagnetic gyroscopes.
