Write Like a Human: How to Fight Bad Information with Good Journalism

ORAL  · Invited

Abstract

AI is supercharging the spread of misinformation and pushing our shared reality to a breaking point. But as slop fills our troughs, a majority of Americans say they want more trust and transparency in media — something we, as journalists and science communicators, can provide. In this talk, Live Science's space and physics editor Brandon Specktor will share how popular science outlets reach wide audiences with writing that's clear, accurate, and engaging. We'll look at what AI can and can't do, and how to push back on slop with simple journalistic skills that any human can master. Finally, we'll end with tips for early-career writers and a quick crash course on pitching.
