Categorization of job roles in the quantum industry

As the quantum industry continues to expand, students, educators, and employers would benefit from knowledge about what specific skills and knowledge are needed for the wide range of emerging roles. To address this challenge, we conducted and analyzed 42 interviews with both managers and employees across 23 quantum companies, representing more than 80 individual positions. From these interviews, we developed a categorization framework for job roles in the quantum industry, outlining the key knowledge, skills, and abilities, typical tasks performed, and educational backgrounds preferred for each category. This framework provides a clearer picture of the diverse and evolving landscape of quantum careers. We will discuss how this categorization can inform curriculum design, program development, and career guidance for students entering the quantum workforce.
