Leveraging labs to bring philosophy to physics

ORAL

Abstract

Labs are particularly well-positioned to engage students with the messy, uncertain, and subjective aspects of physics. I will present examples of ways we’ve been structuring lab activities to simulate this messiness, as well as classroom discussion prompts that support explicit discussion of ideas that bring philosophical thinking to physics. I will report on student engagement, but focus on proposing methods of measuring the impacts of these ideas on students, which go beyond epistemology and typical PER ideas about what counts as knowledge.
