Being a Physicist in Challenging Times

ORAL

Abstract

Physics professors spend a large part of their time teaching classes, mentoring students, and performing research. In a world where federal support for research is threatened, student wellbeing and mental health are challenged by forces beyond the classroom, and classroom exchanges are being examined in congressional testimony, it can be very hard to continue "Physics as Ususal". Drawing from experience of supporting research and faculty development as Associate Dean in a large College of Arts and Sciences, and as an advocate for inclusion in multiple APS programs, this talk will address the challeges faced in the classroom and research group. The aim is to provide encouragement and suggestions as to how physics professors can "meet the moment" and maintain inclusive and supportive classrooms, research groups, and departments in an ever-changing reality.
