Instructional practices with calculus in introductory calculus-based mechanics

ORAL

Abstract

As part of a collaborative project studying student and instructor perceptions of calculus in calculus-based physics, we have engaged in a study of instructional practices. The study has included analysis of textbooks as well as interviews with instructors. For this talk, we will describe results of the textbook analysis and preliminary analysis of the instructor responses. Our results suggest that while the concepts of calculus are prominent at key junctures of the mechanics course, in practice, some students will encounter very few calculus operations. We discuss evidence for this claim and implications.
