The Simons Observatory: Commissioning and Initial Science Observations of the Large Aperture Telescope
ORAL
Abstract
The Simons Observatory (SO) is a next generation Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiment located in the Atacama Desert in Chile. SO comprises three small aperture telescopes (SATs) and one large aperture telesocpe (LAT). The LAT achieved first light in April of 2025, and subsequently underwent commissioning tests before moving on to Initial Science Observations (ISO). This talk provides an overview of the commissioning tests done as well as some ISO results. In particular, we present several measurements of the instantaneous noise of the telescope. All measures are in good agreement, and meet or exceed the goals laid out in the SO Science Goals and Forecasts paper. We will also present progress in refining the LAT scan strategy.
