Nielsen-Olesen flux tube plus electric charge

ORAL

Abstract

We investigated the system of a 2+1-dimensional electric charge placed in the background field of a Nielsen-Olesen flux tube. This setup carries both momentum and angular momentum in the electric and magnetic fields. The field angular momentum is analogous to a similar result for a 3+1-dimensional magnetic charge plus electric charge. The presence of field momentum in this system is a new feature, which has the potential consequence of violating the center-of-energy theorem. We are partially able to address this issue by finding that this system also carries hidden mechanical momentum.
