Experiences with Publishing on Condensed Matter Physics
ORAL · Invited
Abstract
Among the branches of physics, condensed matter is unquestionably the most overlooked in the popular imagination. I sought to address this by writing a popular book on the subject. Published as The Magick of Matter (Profile, UK 2022) / The Magick of Physics (Simon and Schuster, US 2023), the book contains fictional passages alongside more standard exposition. It came from my attempt to capture the 'magic' we as practitioners see in the subject: its ability to inspire us, and why this had not previously been conveyed more widely.
In this talk I will recount my route to publication and things I learnt along the way, with the hope of inspiring more books on the subject.
