Recognition of classical general coordinate covariance in historical approaches to quantum gravity

ORAL

Abstract

I will give a brief overview of the degree to which the underlying classical general spacetime coordinate covariance was recognized and taken into account in historical approaches to an eventual quantum theory of gravity. Principle foci will be the functional integral methods of Wheeler-DeWitt, the on-going string D-brane theory, and loop quantum gravity models.
