Public Engagement is Essential to Physics: Steps for Shifting the Culture
ANCILLARYEVENT · EVM-G67 · ID: EVM-G67
In order to reach the full civic and scientific potential of physics, a culture change in physics is needed to recognize informal physics education (also referred to as public engagement or outreach) as an essential disciplinary practice. That is, engaging in informal physics education is part of what it means to ''do physics.'' This session will explore the recommendations for fostering this cultural shift that are reported in a white paper from the June 2024 Summit of the Joint Network for Informal Physics Education and Research (JNIPER). The session will include a panel followed by an interactive discussion on concrete steps that individuals, departments, and organizations can take to promote public engagement as a central physics practice, ultimately leading to a deeper connection between physics and society, strengthening our mutual potential and impact for good.
