Practicing Professionalism Framework Workshop for Physics Educators

ANCILLARYEVENT · EVS-W41 · ID: EVS-W41

The Practicing Professionalism Framework (PPF) provides a flexible classroom structure that helps students build core physics knowledge and discipline-specific skills while authentically engaging with topics the broader physics community cares about. Guided by instructor interests, these topics may include the history of physics, social justice and equity in a physics context, outreach, and public policy.

PPF is designed to support students’ development as scientific thinkers and as people—regardless of their major—while broadening their understanding of what it means to be a physicist and to do physics. By expanding students’ perceptions of the physics community, the framework can foster a stronger sense of inclusion, belonging, and professional identity.

This workshop will introduce physics educators to the three components of the PPF and demonstrate how they can be used to reframe courses in ways that meaningfully connect physics content to real-world contexts. Because PPF does not prescribe how to teach, it can be adapted to a wide range of instructional settings and is often implemented with modest changes to existing course content and structure.

Participants are encouraged to bring syllabi from one or more physics courses—majors or non-majors, with or without labs—to actively work on applying the framework. This workshop is designed to equip physics educators with practical tools to implement PPF and transform their next physics course.

Please note: attendance at, and registration for, the entire Global Physics Summit is not required to participate in this Short Course. When you register, you can select to attend only the Short Course.
